Civil War veterans

For Glen & Pam Hopkinson, their children, and all their posterity

FamilySearch, read for Todd Hopkinson (KWH7-P9F), shows one direct ancestor with explicit Civil War service. He is on Pam’s line. The page is short on purpose. A longer roster would be invented men.

One name with explicit service Pam’s line 9th West Virginia Cavalry October 2026

One direct ancestor, explicit service. The search was for direct ancestors of Todd Hopkinson. John Milton Kent is the one for whom FamilySearch recorded explicit Civil War service. This page does not say that nobody else served. It says nobody else was found with service stated. Side, regiment, and town are not guessed for anyone whose record does not name them.

John Milton Kent

1833–1906 · Pam’s 2nd great-grandfather · LZ8F-D6N

FamilySearch records him in Company L, and then in Company C, of the 9th West Virginia Cavalry Volunteers. That is a United States volunteer regiment. The company letters are both kept, in that order, because the tree gives both. No battle, no wound, and no enlistment town are added here. They were not in the note this page is built from.

On the family history map, West Virginia marks the regiment, not a house. A pin on a county would pretend to a residence the record used here does not name.

Thomas Kent Sr, a Revolutionary War private on Pam’s line, shares the surname. This page does not assert that John Milton Kent descends from him. That link is not part of the service note.

Limits

What this page will not do

  • It will not fill the roster with New England men because the older stories are New England stories. Those families are where a search can start. They are not a list of soldiers.
  • It will not assign a side to anyone except Kent, whose regiment is United States volunteer cavalry.
  • It will not treat “9th West Virginia Cavalry” as the town he lived in.

Revolutionary War names, including the two disputes, are on the Revolutionary War page. Earlier stories: Mayflower, Hannah Duston, Augustine Bearse.
